Item Description

40 piece Silver Fiddle & Thread Canteen of Cutlery, London 1838-48 by Chawner & Company

The Service

We are pleased to be offering a great opportunity to buy a straight, early Victorian canteen of silver in the favoured Fiddle & Thread Pattern and made by the best flatware makers of the period. This service provides for the five standard pieces for 8 place settings.

All the spoons and forks were made in London by Chawner & Company between 1838 and 1848. The eight table spoons were the first pieces to be made and bear the mark of Mary Chawner, whilst all other pieces date from 1847/8 and bear the mark of George Adams who was the owner of Chawners from 1840 to 1882.

All pieces bear the same original engraved crest featuring a portcullis.

Fiddle & Thread Pattern

Fiddle Pattern was the dominant flatware pattern of 19th Century Britain, however it stemmed from the same shaped French pattern that had a thread design running around the border. In the UK this became known as Fiddle & Thread. It is a very popular pattern as it treads the fine line between a completely plain design and an ornate design.

Components

This 40-piece service consists of the following:

8 Table/soup Spoons 22.7cm

12 Dessert Forks 17.2cm

8 Table/dinner Forks 20.5cm

12 Dessert Spoons 18.2cm

12 Teaspoons 14.7cm

Total weight of weighable silver 2580 grams (83 troy ounces).

Optional Extras

We have plenty more fiddle & thread items in stock in the same pattern by Chawner & Company (without the same crest) and can increase the size of the canteen if and how required. We can also supply modern silver knives that would be excellent accompaniments if needed.

Condition

Excellent polished condition with unworn bowl and full length fork tines. The crests are crisp throughout.

Presentation

This canteen is offered loose. We can supply anti-tarnish cutlery rolls on request. These navy blue rolls have individual pockets to hold 12 items per roll and are available for £15 each.

As with all the canteens available from our web-site, we are happy to send a sample place setting for approval, on receipt of a fully refundable surety payment, prior to purchasing this canteen.
