Item Description
The fashion for silver or silvergilt dessert sets was brought to Britain by French aristocrats fleeing the Revolution of 1789. Because the steel blades of regular table knives reacted with fruit acids, the blades tainted the flavour of delicate (and expensive) fruit. Using soft silver blades solved this problem and Voila! A new 'must' was added to the ever-growing requisites of the British home. This set of twelve pieces was made in two different years by the man and wife team of William and Mary Chawner. William died leaving his business to Mary and this set was made in the period before and just after his death in April 1834. This set is in excellent condition with little sign of wear. Just the thing for a chic dinner party! Lovely marks, a sweet squirrel crest, and an engraved S on the reverse. The works!
