Item Description
A superb Copeland armorial plate. Gilded polished Greek style border with Crest and Armorial for FOWLER and unidentified arms.
Descended from Sir Richard Fowler of Foxley, Bucks. Richard the Lionheart Kinghted him in the field. During the siege of Acre (1190), while the King slept, the saracens had killed the look outs, but Fowler had checked them and raised the alarm to repel an attack and save the King.
Motto: Sapiens Qui Vigilat.
"He is wise who watches". The chevron and three crosses represent the King and the crusades.
Measures approx 9.5 inches wide.
Excellent condition. Some re gilding.
