Item Description
A beautfiul Georgian armorial fob seal. Finely cut carnelian hardstone set in a rose gold cased mount. Crest blazon: "Out of a ducal crown or, an eagles head sa., between two ostrich feathers ar".
MANNING of Kent.
Arms, blason: "Gules, a cross patonce
between four trefoils, slipped or ".
Measurements: 36mm tall.
Intaglio: 24mm by 19mm.
Condition: This seal was used and loved by its owner and is presented in country house condition. We can only imagine the number of letters it sealed and their subject matter. Small flake to right hand corner of stone. Still gives a fine impression.
There was a Judge James Manning (1781-1866), Serjeant at Law of Lincoln's Inn. He revived an old dignity of Queens Ancient Serjeant, which allowed him to sit in the House of Lords, but not to vote. He was judge of the New Whitechapel County Court. His London home was 44 Philmore Gardens, Kensington.
