Red Rover was a sailing Clipper, first of the British opium clippers. At the time, the Europeans believed Opium was a legitimate medicinal commodity. The Chinese authorities were against the trade. "The voyages of this vessel are quite astonishing and unparalleled" reported a local newspaper. She sailed from China to Bengal in 23 days and Calcutta to Lintin in only 18 days. The owner/ captain was William Clifton. In 1834 Jardine Matheson & Co bought shares in her. The same year, the EIC lost its trading monopoly in China. 1842, Hong Kong established as a British Colony.
