Item Description
A beautiful armorial porcelain round pomade pot, with lid.
Superb turquoise ground colour, with central gilt edged reserve. Central hand painted WESTHEAD crest.
J.P.Westhead (1807-1877) was a prominent businessman and Weslyian Methodist. He was chairman of the Manchester and Birmingham railways, later Director of the London and North Western Railways, M.P for Knaresborough and later York. He was a patron and later partner of the John Ridgway porcelain company.
By 1862, it was known as Brown-Westhead, Moore & co. As such, several unique presentation services were made for him as gifts, bearing his coat of arms or crest. Perhaps also to celebrate him being elected to parliament.
He married Betsy Brown in 1828, Heiress of Lea Castle, where they lived from 1848.
