Item Description
Shells were a popular motif in design, and these butter shells have whelk feet and engraved crest and motto Uno Ictu (At one blow) for James Morison (1770-1840), a Scottish self styled physician.
By 1825 he was marketing a pill 'vegetable universal medicines,' commonly known as 'Morison's Pills'. His medicines became highly popular, especially in the west of England, and in 1828 he had retail premises in New Road, London which he named 'The British College of Health'. He had a home in Middlesex but settled in Paris eventually. From 1830 to 1840, he is said to have paid £60,000 to the English Government for medicine stamp duty.
