Item Description

a magnificent and large gold mounted intaglio amethyst fob seal, chased with acanthus leafs and scrolling, set with a rectangular mixed cut amethyst intaglio seal engraved with a coat of arms and crest of CAREY

Height approx: 55mm / 2"
Seal approx: 36mm x 30mm / 3 1/2" x 3"


History

The arms are those of Carey impaling Le Marchant for Sir Octavius Carey (1785-1844) and his wife Harriet (1793-1877). The star beneath the arms could be that of the Order of the Bath or Order of Guelph. Carey was made a Companion of the Bath in 1815, Knight Commander of the Order of Guelph in 1835 and Knight Commander of the Bath in 1837. Carey joined the army in 1801 and rose through the ranks to being Major General in 1837. He came from a Guernsey family and continued to reside there.
