a rare silver inkstand designed as a Roman oil lamp, the body decorated with foliate and ribbon designs,the handle terminating in a cast family crest, the obverse of the hinged cover cast as a coat of arms, the reverse engraved with foliate and scrolling decoration and opening to reveal the original clear glass inkwell
French marks and maker's mark
Additionally engraved with retailer's signature: BERNARD, 1, RUE DE LA PAIX, A PARIS for Charles Martial Bernard (1824-96) who continued the firm of royal jewellers established at the address by his father Jean Martial in 1826. Bernard was an early patron of Louis Cartier.
