Item Description

A late 18th century bookplate for Thomas Fowell Buxton Esqr.

Thomas Fowell Buxton of Earls Colne, Essex and sometime High sheriff, 1756-1793, was the eldest son of Isaac Buxton and Sarah Fowell. He married in 1782 Anna, eldest daughter of Osgood Hanbury of the Grange Coggleshall Essex, a partner in a brewery. His eldest son, also Thomas Fowell Buxton eventually became sole owner of Truman Hanbury and Buxton, an MP, anti-slavery campaigner and Baronet.

Thomas Fowell Buxton is the ancestor of the many current Buxtons.
