Item Description

An early 20th century bookplate for Henry Rogers Broughton (1900-1973), younger son of Urban Broughton.

Urban Broughton (1857-1929) was a civil engineer who specialised in drainage systems (he oversaw the installation of a drainage system to the Houses of Parliament). He was recruited by Henry Huttleston Rogers, principal of the Standard Oil Co., to oversee a water and sewage project for thetown of Fairhaven, Massachusetts and married his daughter Clara. After a successful career in the US, spanning mining, railroads and oil, Urban and Clara returned to Britain in 1912 with their two sons. Urban became a Conservative MP and close friend of Andrew Bonar Law. He died whilst in the process of being elevated to the Peerage a Baron Fairhaven. His eldest son was instead created Baron Fairhaven. He was succeeed by the younger son Henry Rogers Broughton as the 2nd Baron Fairhaven of Anglesey Abbey in Cambridgeshire in 1966.
