Item Description

A superb porcelain plate, made for Princess Louise ( Louise Caroline Alberta) GCVO, GBE, RRC , GCSTJ, VA, Duchess of Argyll, Vice Regal Consort of Canada. Daughter of Queen Victoria and Albert. Exceptional delicacy and translucency.
Louise was born at Buckingham Palace. As a young woman she acted as Victoria's secretary. A talented sculptor and a supporter of the feminist movement, she later married John Campbell, Marquess of Lorne, (heir to the Dukedom of Argyll-Inverary Castle), at Windsor Castle. In 1871 Lorne was appointed Governor of Canada and she became Viceregal Consort. They took up residence in Rideau Hall in Ottawa. The province of Alberta is named after her, as is Mount Alberta and four regiments.

Recent allegations have been made that she had an affair and bore a child, the father being Walter Stirling an Army officer. Nick Locock a descendant, had requested a DNA test and exhumation of his grandfather's body in 2004.
