Item Description

A superb desk intaglio seal, made for the HENNESSY family of BALLYMACMOY, Cork, Ireland and COGNAC, France.

Crest: "An arm embowed in armour holding in hand a battle axe all proper". Motto: "Vi vivo et armis". I live by force and by arms.

Possibly made for Major General Sir George Robertson Hennessy KCB. (See medal below badge).

Richard Hennessy (1724-1800) founded his own brand of Cognac in France.

Measurements: 16mm face. 95mm including shaft.
