The Walpole Family Crest

Earl of Orford of Houghton Hall, Norfolk. Sir Robert Walpole, 1676-1744, Britains first and longest serving Prime Minister, was created Earl of Orford in 1741. His eldest son, also Robert, was created Baron Walpole of Walpole in 1723. The title became extinct upon the death of the 4th and last Earl, the writer Horace Walpole, in 1797 whereupon Houghton estate passed to the Marquis of Cholmondeley, who was the descendant of the only daughter of the 1st Earl. The Barony of Walpole passed to the 5th Baron Walpole of Wolterton the descendant of the younger brother of the 1st Earl. The arms of both branches of the family are easiest to differeentiate by the motto. The Walpole's of Wolterton use the motto "Sibi constat". SNBM
