The Browne Family Crest
Edward and Tobias Browne. Taken from 18th century bookplates. The Rev Edward Brown AM was educated at Clare College Cambridge and was the son of the Rev Edward Browne, rector of Connington Cambridge from 1683-1700. Edward junior married Elizabeth Rustat, daughter of Tobias Rustat of Withersfield and their son, Tobias commissioned the bookplates in 1738 when he went up to Caius College, Cambridge in 1738. Although authority to bear the arms has not been proved futher explanation may be found in John Titford's article in the bookplate journal, volume 9 number 1 p29-38. The crest is that granted to James Willymott, High Sheriff of Hertfordshire in 1684, whose neice married Rev Edward Browne, Rector of Conington, Cambridgeshire.
