The Sale Family Crest

William Michel Sale. Taken from a bookplate. According to the bookplate society a monument in the church of St James the Great at Thorley, Herts. records that “William Michel Sale Esqr of Bedlow Ridge in the County of Bucks Representative of the Ancient Family long established at that Place was the sole surviving Son of George Sale Esqr well known as the learned Translator of the Koran”. His sole daughter and heiress was Mary Sarah who married Thomas Pennington, rector of that parish from 1798 and of Kingsdown in Kent (she d.1847 aged 87). Pennington was the nephew of celebrated writer and translator Elizabeth Carter (1717-1806).
