The Ellery Family Crest
The founder of the American family of that name was William Ellery, who came from Bristol, England, and settled in Gloucester, Mass., in 1663. The origin of the family is thought to be French, although the arms we give are found in Burke to the names of Eldres or Eleris. The arms are found in this country on the seal of Benjamin Ellery of Newport, the son of the colonist, who occupied a prominent and wealthy position in the Rhode Island colony (1669-1746). Several ancient tombstones of various members of the family bear the same devices.
