The Shirley Family Crest

William Shirley, the Royal Governor of Massachusetts (1740), belonged, undoubtedly, to the Shirleys of Wiston, county Sussex, a branch of the noble house of Ferrers. His son, Thomas Shirley, a Major General in the English Army, was Governor of the Leeward Islands, and created a baronet in 1786. The baronetcy of Shirley (of Oakhall, county Sussex), became extinct in 1815, at the death s.p. of the second baronet.
