The Carroll Family Crest

Burke recognizes two different branches of the famed O'Carroll family as having settled in Maryland. They both proceed from the Lords of Ely O'Carroll, and from Sir Maolroona O'Carroll, chief of his name, knighted in 1603. Charles O'Carroll, the emigrant-ancestor of the best known of the two branches, was grandson of Sir Maolroona O'Carroll, and received a grant of sixty thousand acres of land in the Maryland colony. His direct descendant, Charles Carroll, signed the Declaration of Independence. The other Carrolls, of Maryland, came over from Spain, by way of St. Kitts, West Indies (temp. Queen Anne). They use the same arms and crest
