According to Anthony Pincott of the Bookplate Society (www.bookplatesociety.org) "Arthur Villettes (1701-1776), diplomatist, was of a Huguenot family that had left France and settled in England after the revocation of the edict of Nantes. British plenipotentiary at Turin, and afterwards in the Helvetic cantons, he retired to Bath, where he died. His library was auctioned by S. Baker and G. Leigh on Tuesday, April the 8th, 1777, and for the four following days. His second son, William Anne Villettes (1754–1808), born at Bern, Switzerland, was an army officer who gets an entry in the Oxford DNB."
Arthur Villettes commissioned an armorial bookplate in the Chippendale style which is listed in the Franks collection at the British Museum under reference F.30392.
