The above crest is a canting crest, for originally the neck of a swan was known as a swyre.
The family bearing this name was originally seated at Cononley House in Yorkshire and acquired Dowgill Hall by marriage. A cadet of this family, John Swire, established the import-export company bearing his name in Liverpool in 1816. His sons took the firm overseas and the eldest, John Samuel Swire, founded the China Navigation Company in 1872. The principal line of the Swire family left Cononley and Dowgill and settled at Orbost on Skye, while the entrepreneurial cadet branch settled at Hubbards Hall.
The motto is a political one, the words having been used by Sallust in his comparison of Cato and Caesar.
