Duffus

Duffus Family History

Burkes Landed Gentry (1965 edition) states that "Duffus is a surname derived from the lands and village of that name in Morayshire.  Possibly the first of the family to settle in Perthshire was Andrew Duffus, who witnessed a Hay charter in 1608."

The family of Duffus of Dalclaverhouse is descended from Thomas Duffus of Rattray in Perthshire, whose grandson James Duffus (1822-1916) of Westport House, Cupar, Fife became a JP and a Bailie and Dean of Dean of Guild of Cupar. Hence, presumably,  the adoption of the second crest showing a demi highlander in the garb of a Bailie of Cupar.   Further genealogical information of this family may be obtained from Burkes Landed Gentry 1965 edition.

The name has also been taken as their title by a branch of the Sutherland family who were Lairds of Duffus.  Sir Alexander Sutherland, a descendant of Nichol Sutherland (younger son of the 4th Earl of Sutherland) was created Baron Duffus in 1650.  The title descended, after some dispute, to Sir George Dunbar, 4th Baronet of Hempriggs and 7th Lord Duffus and became extinct upon his death in 1875.
