Bouverie

Bouverie Family History

The Oxford Dictionary of Surnames states that the name is derived from the Old French ‘boverie’ meaning a ‘stable for oxen’ and therefore denoted someone who lived by a cowshed or worked in one.

However in the United Kingdom the only prominent family with this surname is that of the Earl of Radnor, whose family originated in the Low Countries (i.e. Holland, Belgium, Luzembourg and parts of France and Germany).  Burkes Peerage states that Laurence des Bouveries, a younger son of the Sieur des Bouveries, Chateau des Bouveries, near Lille was founder of the family in Britain.  He married Barbara van den Hove, the niece of rich silk manufacturer from Frankfurt and settled in Canterbury in 1568.

His grandson, Sir Edward des Bouverie, became a prosperous Turkey merchant and died in 1694.  His eldest son, Sir William des Bouverie continued in the same trade and was created a baronet in 1713.  Turkey merchants did not deal in the birds but traded with the Ottoman Empire.

Sir Jacob de Bouverie, 3rd Baronet, was ennobled as Viscount Folkestone in 1747 and his eldest son was MP for Salisbury from 1747-1761 and was created the Earl of Radnor in 1765.  He had adopted the form "Bouverie" by Act of Parliament in 1737 and his brother also dropped the "de" at a later date.

The second Earl chnaged the family name to Pleydell-Bouverie upon inheriting the estate of his maternal grandfather, Sir Mark Pleydell (1st and last Bt) of Coleshill, co. Berks.

William Pleydell-Bouverie, 3rd Earl of Radnor (above) was a radical Whig MP from 1801-1828 until succeeding his father.

William Pleydell-Bouverie is currently the 9th Earl of Radnor.

A full genealogical history of the Pleydell-Bouverie family is given in Burkes Peerage.

The Bouverie family of Delapre Abbey are descended from the second son of the 1st Viscount Folkestone.

The Pleydell-Bouverie-Campbell-Wyndham family are descended from the 4th son of the 2nd Earl.

The name Bouverie should not be confused with Bouvier, the maiden name of Jacqueline Kennedy/Onasis whose father was descended from a french cabinetmaker who emigrated from France to the USA in 1815 after the defeat of Napoleon.
