Balmoral Castle, Scotland was purchased by Prince Albert in 1852. A new castle was built beside it, of appropriate size for a Queen and Empress. As recorded in her journal, "all seemed to breathe freedom and peace, and to make one forget the world and its sad turmoils". The surrounding hilly landscape reminded them of Thuringia, Albert's homeland in Germany.
