Item Description

A George II silver salver with scroll and shell border, on three hoof feet, By William Peaston, London 1747.

Later engraved, obverse, with monogram JC surmounted by a Baron’s coronet and, reverse, with 'From the Queen, Xmas 1888'.
Diameter approx.: 320mm

Personally selected by Queen Victoria from the Royal Collection, this silver salver was gifted by her at Christmas 1888 to Lady Jane Churchill (1826-1900), a lady of the bedchamber for forty-six years and the queen’s closest and most powerful female companion.

Queen Victoria, and her husband Prince Albert before his death, celebrated Christmas at Windsor Castle, with gift-giving to family and her household on Christmas Eve in a room decorated with several trees, a tradition the Royal Family made popular in England. The Queen’s journal entries for Christmas 1888 reveal her close involvement in the selection, wrapping and rituals of gift-giving and how she dined with Lady Jane Churchill, recipient of this salver, on Christmas Day.

December 24 [1888] Xmas Eve

An almost entirely wet morning. Very busy preparing all the Xmas presents. In the afternoon, took a short drive with Vicky. Louise & Lorne arrived. Had our Xmas tree & presents in the Dining Room as usual, but all felt sad, only the little Children, were bright & happy. A family dinner.

December 25 [1888] Christmas Day

A completely wet day, after a fine morning. Gave & received many cards. Poor dear Vicky had not slept all night. She thought so much of last year, when dear Fritz was so well & happy, & she, so full of hope. Service at ¼ to 11, performed by Mr Peile, who preached very well. 2 Christmas Carols were sung. Resting & writing. Good accounts of Sir Wm Jenner. Went to the present room. Read & wrote. Went down at 6 to the present room, where the tree was lit again. Showed our things to the Ladies & Gentlemen. Dinner, as well as luncheon, like yesterday in the Council Room. Jane C., J. Ely, Count Seckendorff & Sir H. Ponsonby dined, & all the others came afterwards into the Drawing room. Thought of the poor mourners at Darmstadt, who were keeping so Christmas, & also of poor Helen, spending a sad one at Hamburg with her Father.
