Item Description

A beautiful Chinese porcelain plate. With exquisite hand painted and gilded decoration. This was made during the reign of Emperor Qianlong (1736-1796) and bears a central coat of arms and crest of DRUMMOND impaling FANE families of Scotland and England. Motto "Marte et Arte".

Wonderful colorful decoration, with archer crest. Made for John Drummond M.P (1754-1835), 12th of Lennoch and 5th of Megginch (Castle), Scotland. he married in 1783 Lady Susan Fane (1768-93), daughter of the Earl of Westmoreland of Apethorpe Hall, Northampton.

Presented in excellent condition for age. Minute nick to rim.
Possible re gilding. This do not detract from the overall beauty of the piece.

In 1785 and 1789 John's brother, Captain Robert Drummond of the East India Company visited Canton with his ship 'General Elliot'. he probably ordered the service. He was first in Europe to bring back a rose, now known as 'Rosa Banksiae Normalis' planted in the castle stableyard. His brother, General Sir Gordon Drummond, was Governor General of Canada. Drummondville, Quebec is named after him. His father SIr Colin Drummond Commissary General and Paymaster to the forces in Canada, serving in 2nd American war. John sold the castle in 1795, passing it on to Robert who entailed it to their brother Adam, later Admiral Drummond. John then lived at Boyce Court,Gloucester.(See picture-house with large tree).
